International student conference „Iustoria 2023: Law and Punishment” held
The Department of Legal History organized the fourth international student conference on Legal History – „Iustoria 2023: Law and Punishment”, from March 23rd to 25th at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law. Prof. Emeritus Sima Avramović, professor of Comparative Legal Tradition, Prof. Dr Zoran Mirković, the dean of the Faculty of Law and professor of Serbian Legal History, and Prof. Dr Milena Polojac, the head of the Department of Legal History and professor of Roman Law, opened the conference and greeted the participants.
On the first conference day, participants had the opportunity to hear the keynote lecture of Prof. Dr Tommasо Beggio from the University of Trento Faculty of Law: “Capital Punishments and Forms of Deprivation of Freedom in Ancient Rome: Remarks on the Influence of Some Roman Criminal Law Concepts on the Western Legal Tradition”. The second conference day began with the keynote lecture of Prof. Dr Thomas Simon of the University of Vienna Faculty of Law, “The Medieval Roots of Penal Law in Western Europe”. Last but not least, Dr Coleman Denehy, a teacher at the Dundalk Institute of Technology and University College Dublin, held his keynote lecture “Crime, punishment, and criminal law in an Irish colonial setting” on the final day of the conference.
Forty students from ten countries were divided into ten English and Serbian sessions, where they presented their research on punishments and penal systems throughout the history. Some of the topics were: ostracism in ancient Greece, punishments in ancient Rome, punishing witchcraft, sanctions in Medieval Serbia, Polish penal system, cruelties of the Spanish inquisition, the use of guillotine in modern France, Yugoslav criminal legislation… The sessions were chaired by the keynote speakers, as well as our teachers from the Department of Legal History and the Department of Criminal Law.
Every participant will have an opportunity to publish their paper in the international academic student journal “Herald of Legal History“, issued by the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law.
