Forvm Romanvm: Prof. Vladimir Simič gave a lecture “Homer as a source for legal history”

The new Forum season in the spring semester, still online, opened on March 5th, 2021 with the lecture “Homer as a source for legal history” by Prof. Dr Vladimir Simič from the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Law. Focusing on key moments from the Iliad and the Odyssey, Professor Simič showed us how much important information these epics provide about important institutions of Ancient Greek law, such as the position of rulers (anax, basileus) and the organization of other important organs of state, such as the assembly (agora) or the administrative council (boule), but also about some important aspects of the society of that period, such as the extended family structure or respect for authority. After the lecture, an interesting discussion developed, dealing with the topic of Homer’s reliability as a source for that period (emphasizing the importance of not only facts, but legal sense), the concept of justice (differences between the concepts of dike and themis, and the goddesses that represent them), the relations of anthropology and legal history…
