THE FACULTY CELEBRATED ST. SAVA’S DAY ON THE 27th OF JANUARY, 2022

The University of Belgrade Faculty of Law celebrated St. Sava – the patron saint of schools – on the 27th of January, 2022. A traditional St. Sava’s feast was organized on the occasion; due to the standing epidemiologic measures, the festivity was adequately reduced, with fewer participants present on site. Anyone with an interest in the celebration could follow the event online, through a link available on the Faculty website and on social media.

The event was opened by the members of the cultural society „Branko Krsmanović”, whose choir performed the hymn dedicated to St. Sava, and then the national anthem – „Bože pravde”. Prof. Dr Miloš Stanković, the presenter of the event, welcomed the guests and then gave up the podium to Prof. Dr Zoran Mirković, the Dean of the Faculty of Law. In his address, the Dean spoke briefly of the life and work of St. Sava and remarked that, if historical records are anything to judge by, St. Sava would still be working on the enlightenment of his people today, as they are in sore need of all kinds of education and decorum. He would reconcile the irreconcilable, because peace and consensus on basic issues are the pledge and foundation of every healthy community. He would endeavour to introduce order and laws, because without order and laws, there is no survival – let alone progress. Finally, he would teach his compatriots and fellow citizens that it is impossible to live in isolation and seclusion, without developing a relationship with those who are different from us and without maintaining an active contact with the world that surrounds us. That is why we still celebrate the memory of this great man, and why we will continue to do so in the future. Prof. Mirković concluded his speech by wishing everyone a happy St. Sava’s day – the Faculty slava.

After the introduction, the Best Student of Class 2017/18, Darko Stevanović, received his diploma and his „Best Student” plaque from the Dean, Prof. Dr Zoran Mirković, along with a monetary award and a set of books. A diploma and a plaque of recognition for outstanding academic achievements (graduating with a perfect grade score), along with a monetary award and a set of books, also went to Đorđe Stepić.

As per tradition, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law handed out plaques of recognition to students with the highest average grades in the academic year 2020/21. The total number of students from all years of basic academic studies who earned this plaque is 250 – a 100 first-year students, 51 second-year students, 50 third-year students, and 49 fourth-year students. The Faculty also awarded 54 grants for basic academic studies and 10 grants for master academic studies. Due to the standing public health measures, only a number of plaques and grants were awarded in person, to the representatives of each generation.

Traditionally, for the twelfth time, a number of awards was handed out by the „Professor Mirko Vasiljević” Foundation, as financial support for students on their road to academic excellence. Assistant Prof. Dr Dalibor Đukić addressed the attendees on behalf of the Foundation, and its founder, Prof. Dr Mirko Vasiljević, handed out the prize for the most successful student in class to Darko Stevanović; the prize for the best paper on Trade Law went to Vladimir Pešić and Nikola Šurjanac, and the prize for low-income students who fulfill all their obligations on time went to Dušan Perović and Igor Đorđević.

Another award was also presented on this occasion by the „Alan Watson” Foundation. The Vice-Dean for scientific and professional work, and the vice-president of the Foundation, Assistant Prof. Dr Nina Kršljanin addressed the attendees, greeting them also on behalf of the president of the Foundation, Prof. Emeritus Sima Avramović; she then proceeded to present this year’s winner, Dušan B. Jović, with the award for the paper titled „Criminal Offences Against the State in the Criminal Code of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia of the 27th of January, 1929”.

At the end of the event, plaques of appreciation were awarded to students who represented our Faculty at the national „Condemn Discrimination” moot court competition, organized once more this year by the Office of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality with the support of the Foundation for Open Society, where they were crowned with success in more than one category. The team that won third place consisted of our students Emilija Gajić, Vasilije Mitrovski and Nevena Nedeljković, and they were prepared for the competition by TA Valerija Dabetić. The team that won first place consisted of Nikola Ivković and Vasilije Bošković, who was also proclaimed the best orator of the competition.
