The “Antiquity and the Modern World” Conference
On Saturday and Sunday, the 6th and 7th of November 2021, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law hosted the 13th international interdisciplinary scientific conference of the Serbian Society for Ancient Studies, under the title “Antiquity and the Modern World: Epistemological Significance of the Ancient Knowledge of Antique Authors and in Later Traditions”. On behalf of the Society for Ancient Studies, Prof. Dr Rastko Vasić addressed the participants at the opening of the conference; Ass. Prof. Dr Nina Kršljanin, the Vice-Dean for Scientific and Professional Work, conveyed the welcoming note of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr Zoran Mirković.
The conference began with the plenary lecture entitled “Some Epithets of the Goddess Aphrodite”, given by Prof. Dr Mirko Obradović of the University of Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy. The presentations continued at the conference room and the seminar room 241 (the “Forvm Romanvm”), in sections dedicated to history and law, archaeology and the arts, and languages and literature.
On the second day of the conference, Prof. Dr Goran Maričić of the University of Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy gave a plenary lecture on “The Position and Status of Decurions in the Late Empire”, co-authored with Prof. Dr Željka Šajin of the University of Banja Luka Faculty of Philosophy. The sessions of the second day were dedicated to philosophy, the heritage of Antiquity, and natural sciences and medicine. In spite of the fact that some of the participants were unable to attend and present their work in person due to the pandemic, the conference was a success, offering some very engaging, active discussions.
