Forvm Romanvm: Professor Victor Castellani held a lecture on political trials in Athens
On December 11, 2020, we were visited by a longtime friend of the Forum, Professor Victor Castellani from the University of Denver. He gave a lecture entitled: “A Murderous ‘Supreme’ Court of Public Passion: Tainted Prosecutions at Athens, of Alcibiades (415 BC) and of the Arginusae Six (406 BC).” The Forum members had the opportunity to hear the background and possible interpretations of these two famous political cases from ancient Athens, with Professor Castellani’s already well-known vivid expressions and humour. After the lecture, an active discussion developed, mostly concerning Alcibiades – his personality and the accusations against him in Athens – but also some terminological dilemmas regarding the translation and transcription of ancient Greek legal terms into English.
