Forvm Romanvm: Prof. Alastair Mann held the lecture “Scotland the good European?”

On December 4th, 2020, members of the Forum had the opportunity to hear the lecture “Scotland the good European? Continuities of representation and union for a small peripheral nation”, held by Prof. Dr Alastair Mann from the University of Sterling Department of History and Politics. Professor Mann gave us a broad overview of Scottish history, primarily through the prism of relations with England and the position in the United Kingdom, as well as the relations with the European Union today, focusing on state policy and ideology, but also economic interests. The lecture touched on a wide range of topics, from the Arbroath Declaration (the “Scottish Magna Carta” of 1320), through the Scottish Parliament and the position of Scottish MPs in the British Parliament, to recent referendums on leaving the UK and Brexit, with occasional parallels and links to Serbian history. The present students and teachers followed the lecture with great interest, so in the end there was a very lively discussion.
