INVITATION FOR THE CONFERENCE “150 YEARS OF THE BIRTH OF THEODOR TARANOVSKY”
The upcoming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian scientist who, with his work in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, made a significant contribution to the Serbian academic community – Theodor (Fyodor) Vasilyevich Taranovsky (1875-1936). He was born on May 12/24, 1875 in Plonsk, in Poland, and graduated from the University of Warsaw Faculty of Law. He received his magister’s degree in 1905 from the University of Saint Petersburg Faculty of Law, with the topic “Legal Method in Science of the State. Overview of its Development in Germany: Historical and Methodological Research”. He received his doctorate from the same faculty in 1911, with the thesis “Dogmatics of Positive State Law in France during the Old Regime”. In Russia, he wrote on history and theory of law, and participated in the publication of important historical sources; in 1918, he was elected a member of the newly founded Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. However, in 1920, he emigrated to the Kingdom of SCS, where he became a professor of the Encyclopedia of Law –the elementary legal theory subject – and the History of Slavic Laws at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law and devoted himself, among other things, to the study of Serbian medieval legal history. His most important works in Serbian, “Introduction to the History of Slavic Laws”, “Encyclopedia of Law” and “History of Serbian Law in the Nemanjić State”, represented a great contribution to the disciplines he taught and studied, and are still used today – the latter, in particular, has been a classic for nine decades, with which any serious study of the law of medieval Serbia must begin. He was elected a full member of the Serbian Royal Academy in 1932 (proclaimed in 1933). He died on 23 January 1936, and was buried at the New Cemetery in Belgrade. He also left behind significant followers: the contribution of two more Russian emigrants, Alexander Soloviev and Vladimir Mošin to the study of Serbian medieval law should be duly noted.
Given the importance of the scientific work of Theodor Taranovsky, as well as the need for further study of his life and work, we are pleased to invite you to the international conference “150 years since the birth of Theodor Taranovsky”, organized by the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law, which will be held on 24 and 25 May 2025.
Participants can apply for the conference with topics both about Taranovsky himself and from the fields he worked in: accordingly, the main focus will be on legal history and legal theory. The working languages of the conference will be Serbian, Russian and English. Participants should, in their application, note whether or not they will present at the conference live or in a hybrid (online) format. A summary of the presentation (between 200 and 500 words) must be submitted to the address: taranovski@ius.bg.ac.rs, no later than 15 February 2025. The papers from the conference, which will be published in a special thematic collection, must be submitted no later than July 15, 2025.
There is no registration fee for participation in the conference. The organizers will make every effort to provide, in addition to the required conference materials and a copy of the collection of papers, with at least part of their travel and accommodation costs for participants from abroad, should they choose to participate in person.
