“European Pension Law” seminar held
At the initiative of Prof. Dr. Hans van Meerten, professor at Utrecht University and Dutch bar admitted lawyer, an online seminar “European Pension Law” was held on March 9 and March 16, 2022. It was attended by 60 law students. The seminar included four hours of lectures, which were dedicated to the following topics: Basics of International Pension Law; Different pillars of pension provision worldwide and how are they funded?; Type of Pension Schemes; European Pension Law – Legal Framework and Lessons for Serbia.
The well-designed structure of the seminar enabled the participants to get acquainted with the pension law of the European Union (EU), as a new branch of law, which is developing rapidly, as the pension markets are intensively internationalized. In this regard, the relevant sources of EU law have been extensively discussed under this course, in particular Directives 2003/41/EC and 2016/2341 on the activities and supervision of institutions for occupational retirement provision (IORP I and II), and Regulation (EU) 2019/1238 on a pan-European Personal Pension Product (PEPP). Since the latter rule will become applicable as from 22 March 2022, the seminar was a great opportunity for the participants to gain knowledge on the most current issues of European law. This is especially since the indicated issues are analyzed in a multidisciplinary perspective, i.e. from the point of view of several legal and related disciplines – from social law, through insurance law and consumer protection law, to capital markets law, economic law, EU law and financial markets. One should also point out the conclusions of lecturer important for the development of the Serbian pension system, since only 3-10 percent of employees in the Republic of Serbia are “covered” by private pension insurance.
The seminar was organized by Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Jelena Lepetić, Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Bojan Milisavljević, Prof. Dr. Vuk Radović, Prof. Dr. Tatjana Jovanić, Prof. Dr. Nataša Petrović-Tomić, Prof. Dr. Ljubinka Kovačević, Ass. Prof. Dr. Filip Bojić, and Dr. Ivana Rodić. Also, the quality of the seminar was contributed by Prof. Dr. Nebojša Jovanović, Prof. Dr. Tatjana Jevremović Petrović, Prof. Dr. Mirjana Radović, Prof. Dr. Svetislav Janković, Ass. Prof. Dr. Nikola Ilić, and teaching assistant Dr. Maša Mišković.
