Forvm Romanvm: Prof. Dr Dragana Dimitrijević gave a lecture “Nostalgia and antinostalgia in Cicero’s works”
On Friday, April 23rd, 2021, Prof. Dr Dragana Dimitrijević from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy held a lecture “Nostalgia and antinostalgia in Cicero’s works”. Referring first to the very notion of nostalgia (and the origin of the word as a psychiatric term in the 17th century!) and some characteristics of ancient Greek and Roman society (as well as Roman and Greek philosophy), she turned to these topics in Cicero’s letters and philosophical works. She drew attention to the fact that his attitudes were changing, and that in addition to nostalgia for Rome and the good old days, opposite feelings were also encountered. She paid special attention to Cicero’s exile from Rome in years 58-57 BC, but also a certain sobriety and awareness of negative phenomena in Roman society upon his return. The discussion after the lecture mostly concerned defining the concepts of nostalgia and antinostalgia, the political reality of Cicero’s time and his attitude towards Roman history and current political events.
