THIRD SEMINAR FOR PHD STUDENTS – PHD COLLOQUIUM HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE-FACULTY OF LAW

Third Seminar for PhD students – PhD Colloquium was held at the Faculty of Law University of Belgrade on the 10th and 11th of May 2023. The PhD Seminar was organized by the Institute for Legal and Social Sciences and Centre for Sociological and Legal Research of the Faculty of Law University of Belgrade.

During the two–day Seminar, all Workshops and PhD Working Sessions were held in a hybrid form – in the premises of the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law and online via Webex platform.

Overall, this year, we had 20 PhD candidates from 7 different countries, including the region and Europe and 42 commentators from 13 countries, encompassing the region, Europe as well as countries such as Argentina and Colombia. More than 22 different academic institutions, universities and institutes participated in this two-day PhD Colloquium.

On the first day of the Seminar, PhD students, commentators and other participants were welcomed by Vice-Dean for Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Nina Kršljanin; Vice-Dean for International Cooperation, Associate Professor Dr. Marko Jovanović; Head of the Institute for Legal and Social Sciences, Professor Ivana Krstić and Head of the Centre for Sociological and Legal Research, Professor Danilo Vuković. In their introductory remarks, professors reminded on the importance of this Seminar for supporting research work of PhD candidates and young academic scholars. In their introductory speeches, they reminded how the writing process of the PhD thesis is indeed a complex and challenging task, and that every guideline from professors, experts, and other members of academia, as well as from peers is very important. They stressed the importance of the Seminars such as this one for building a network of young researchers that will enable them to exchange their ideas, opinions and find useful comments and advice.

This was followed by the workshops intended for PhD students: “Designing of a doctoral dissertation, review and assessment procedures”, presented by Dragana Stolić, educator at Department of scientific information and education, University Library Svetozar Marković; “Using bibliographic tools (citation managers) in writing a scientific research paper: Zotero”, delivered by Milica Ševkušić, librarian at the Institute of Technical Sciences SANU and finally “Strategies for successful PhD studies by  Dr. Ivana Bajić Hajduković, author and educational consultant in higher education, creator of the PhDMentoringPlus program. These workshops had the aim to introduce PhD students with some helpful administrative and technical instruments but also motivational and psychological tools in order to enhance their productivity and work pace.

The First Working Session was during the afternoon, where PhD students presented their research papers and projects of doctoral dissertations form different areas of law: Theory of law, Human Rights and Tort Law, Criminal law, Company Law, Civil Procedural Law, and Family Law. Commentators in this Session were renowned professors from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law and Faculty of Philosophy, University of Nis Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb Faculty of Political Sciences as well as researchers from the Institute of Social Sciences and attorneys at law.

The second day of the PhD Colloquium, started with the Second working session, where topics such as Tax Law and Administrative Law, Labor Law, Gender Equality and Sociology were presented by the PhD students dealing with the aforementioned areas of law and commented by professors from the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Law, University of Banja Luka Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb Faculty of Law and  the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law.

Finally, this year, PhD Seminar for students- PhD Colloquium introduced International Session in cooperation with ALF (Advancing Cooperation on the Foundations of Law) project, led by University of Belgrade Faculty of Law. International ALF PhD Session, first of its kind, was held on Thursday, 11th of May 2023, as an afternoon session, in a hybrid form (at the Faculty of Law and online) and had the purpose to give young Ph.D. candidates and researchers the opportunity to present their research work, receive constructive comments and suggestions for the improvement of their doctoral dissertation in the field of Theory of Law, Philosophy and Sociology of Law as well as International Public Law and Human Rights. Nine PhD candidates from the University of Genoa Department of Law, University of Lisbon School of Law and University of Belgrade Faculty of Law presented their research papers. The comments on their presented thesis were provided by professors, senior lecturers, post-doc researchers and other members of the Academia from 10 different countries and 13 different universities and academic institutions: University of Genoa Department of Law, Bocconi University in Milan, University of Lisbon School of Law, University of Oxford Faculty of Law St Catherine’s College, Birmingham Law School, University of Girona, Pontificia University Javariana de Colombia Faculty of Legal Sciences, University Nacional Del Sur in Argentina, Surrey Centre for Law and Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics at the University of Krakow Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade Faculty of Political Science and finally University of Belgrade Faculty of Law.

The Third Seminar for PhD Students was successfully closed by all the participants of the ALF International Session, members of the ALF Project Team, PhD candidates and commentators as well as by the members of the Organizational Team: Marija Vlajković, Valerija Dabetić and Ana Memeti. The organisers concluded that the PhD Seminar will continue to contribute to the development of the research network and work of the young academing researches and PhD candidates in the following years, expanding its international cooperation with different universities and academic institutions.
